Improving Groundwater Planning Through Needs Analysis
An article written by researchers from the Water Planning Tools project has been published in the latest edition of the Water Magazine. The article reports back on the stakeholder analysis and needs assessment undertaken as part of the trial of water planning tools. It provides insight into the ways in which thorough and systematic assessments can improve the role of water planning in targeting the priority issues faced in and by a catchment.
Community committee to advise on Murray Darling water plan
A new Murray Darling Basin community committee has been formed to advise on the development of the plan to regulate the use of water. The committee will provide expertise on a range of issues, including irrigated agriculture, basin communities, indigenous matters, environmental management and water use, Climate Change Minister Penny Wong told reporters in Sydney on Friday.
Groundwater Visualisation Modelling in the Northern Territory
The Howard East borefield relies on groundwater supplies to satisfy rural and urban residential, horticultural and commercial needs. However, despite recent and significant growth, there is no regional water plan currently in place to ensure that this resource is managed sustainably for future generations.
Simulation Tools: Mythic River Scenario
At the second National Water Planners Forum, Mark Hampstead and Claudia Baldwin introduced the 'Mystic River Scenario': an innovative role-play scenario designed to simulate a realistic context for consideration of key water planning issues including climate change and risk assessment. The information used to design the Mythic River scenario is derived from multiple CSIRO sustainability studies, and is presented using a similar strcuture, based on the assumption that this type of information on future inflows, land use changes and projected water demand will be similar to the type of information that planners do and will use in developing water management regimes.
Virtual Water Trading Simulation
CSIRO economists have developed the Australian Knowledge Exchange (AKX) - an online prediction market which aims to forecast water availability. The AKX has been set up by CSIRO to test whether trading knowledge online can work for water management and decision-making.
Fifteen Free Online Collaborative Tools
The Six Revisions Weblog recently published an article reviewing 15 free tools to help you facilitate remote/web-based collaboration which, although geared towards project management, could easily be applied to planning activities.
Engagement Tools: Catchment Detox
Catchment Detox, an online catchment management simulation game, is an initiative of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), in partnership with eWater CRC, the CSIRO, the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR) and National Science Week.
Groundwater Visualisation Modelling
A joint initiative between Queensland University of Technology researchers and the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Water is examining the use of new technologies to develop 3-D visualisation and animation models to support the management of groundwater resources.
