Household water bills increasing in Victoria

The average annual water bill for central Victorian residents is approaching $1,000, with new price rises approved by the sector's regulator.

The Essential Services Commission has confirmed Coliban Water's bills will rise by 5 per cent in the coming financial year to an average of $955.

The increase is among the lowest in the state, with some regions facing rises of up to 15 per cent.

Coliban Water's Gavin Hanlon says the authority has improved its financial position.

"We had a pathway which meant that over the next three years our financials would improve over time," he said.

"It wasn't our plan to try and fix them all in one year, otherwise the customer impact was going to be too large, so certainly things are improving as planned.

"Our revenue's down a little bit as you'd expect because consumption's right down because of how wet and cold it's been but certainly things have improved [in] the last three or four years."
